What to Wear at a Family Photo Session

We have all been there. You book your family photo session. You get excited. You can finally update the photos on your facebook page, your walls at home, or even your yearly greeting card. But then the panic sets in. What are we going to wear?!

Let me help you take some of the stress out of planning an outfit. The outfit planning process can easily be the most challenging for moms because 1.) We want to look our best, 2.) We want our kids to look amazing and 3.) Will my partner like what I want him/her to wear? But it really doesn't have to be that stressful.

I always suggest starting with mom's outfit. Then think about what you want others to wear. It is important to get mom feeling and looking her best so start with that.

You don't have to buy something new. If you already have an outfit that you love in your closet you can wear that. In the summer months (And even winter months here in Vegas) maxi dresses are always a safe bet. They are flattering and can be styled in a variety of different ways. Here are some of my favorites.

Wear what you feel good in! Moms and Dads, this tip is for you specifically. If you aren't comfortable in what you've chosen for pictures, it will show! If you can't find a dress you feel good in, but you rock a good pair of skinny jeans, do that!

I don't want you to be stiff because you are uncomfortable. I will have you playing or snuggling your kids throughout your whole session! So select items that you can move in. Raise your arms up over your head, can you move comfortably? Do shirts rise up to far? Take note of those small details when choosing an outfit.

Now that mom is dressed let's start thinking coordinating color pallet for the rest of the family. This does NOT mean that everyone wear the exact same colors. You just want them to be coordinated. If your dress has a floral pattern then select colors from the pattern that can be worn by other members of the family.

Layers are your friend! In the summer think belts, sun hats, pendant jewelry to add some pops of color and layering. For fall and winter think vests, cardigans, scarves, jackets.

Here are some photos of families that rocked the coordinated colors:

Some of my favorite places to look for family photo outfits are:

Amazon, H&M, Old Navy, Gap, and Target.

And if you are still having trouble I have created a pinterest board to help as well.

If you need any help or suggestions send me a message. I am here to help!
